Although the JV softball team lost both games in their tournament February 25, they have gone through many trials since the season began such as losing their pitcher to surgery and only having ten players.

“We have only have one extra [player], and one of our girls had surgery, so we’ve only been playing with nine for the past little bit,” freshman Dani Leopardi said. “So if someone gets hurt, that’s not gonna be good.”

There are nine positions for softball, so with one girl hurt, all of the other players needed to play carefully so they do not get hurt as well.

“We all get along pretty well and work well together,” Leopardi said. “We have to protect each other so we don’t get hurt.”

Not only was freshman Shellbi Franco out due to surgery for full bladder stones, she was also the team’s pitcher.

“We didn’t [have a pitcher], but we got a girl from basketball, AJ Futrell, and she’s a freshman too,” Leopardi said.

Half the players on the team are freshman, but they enjoy the challenge of playing with older girls.

“When we didn’t have our teams yet, I played harder,” Leopardi said. “Now that I’m actually on the team, I don’t feel like I need to play harder – I just always try to play my best.”
