Opening with a ROAR
The new Frisco Public Library is officially open to the public! The library held its grand opening on Saturday March 4, 2023. The library has countless exciting features, including a life-size T-rex model.
This library’s enormous size makes it unique. It stretches across 158,068 square feet, making it one of the largest libraries in the state and about triple the size of the old library.
The new library will incorporate things for people of all ages, including an outdoor terrace, a teen space, a computer lab, an area where kids can program robots, and more!
“[My favorite thing is] all of the community study rooms, conference rooms, and meeting space!” youth services manager Jennifer Cummings said.
The library staff worked with architects and community feedback to come up with an AIA award-winning design for the new library. The inspiration for the new library’s design is the Blackland Prairie. The Blackland Prairie is an ecological region that stretches across Texas. Frisco is one of many cities built on the prairie, and many parts of the library’s design reflect aspects of the Blackland Prairie. One example is the outside of the building, which was designed like a dogtrot-style home, a popular 19th century home design in the prairie.
The new library is only a few blocks away from the old building, located at 8000 Dallas Parkway, Frisco, TX, south of Cotton Gin Road and next to the Frisco Discovery Center. This building was chosen as the site for the new library because of its large size, open space, and the building’s ability to support the weight of books. The building was originally designed to be a rocket factory, so the concrete floors were built to support heavy loads. The old library will become part of city hall.
Frisco voters approved this project back in 2019, and the budget for this project was about 62 million dollars. The funding and community feedback that went into this project is reflected in an incredible new library that commemorates many aspects of the community and has exciting features for every resident.
