The dramatic rom-com, “Anyone but You”, directed by Will Gluck, takes a modern twist on the Shakesperian play “Much Ado About Nothing”. From the start to the end, love is filled with tribulations. After a perfect first date, Bea (played by Sydney Sweeney) and Ben’s (played by Glen Powell) spark quickly turned into a disaster full of misunderstanding. Six months later, these enemies are forced to reunite and pretend to date as they have friends who are getting married and don’t want to ruin the events to come.
We were eager to watch this movie, and it lived up to all of our expectations, which was a hilarious, dramatic rom-com. We thought this movie highlighted love and all its ups and downs very well, while keeping us on our toes. Some of the important themes throughout this movie were imperfection, letting go of the past, and finding what-or who you love. Bea struggles to find her identity as she is pressured to go to law school and marry a family friend, both of which she doesn’t want to do. We both felt for Bea as we ourselves are starting to face college and future careers. Ben also faces the trial of grief and fixing what’s broken. He misses his old relationship, but is worried that his impulsive actions will ruin the ones he has now. He always utilized his mother’s saying: No matter how broken something is, it can always be fixed.
A key element in this movie was the comedy of it, which was one of the reasons it’s so appealing to many viewers. Although there were many dramatic scenes, the director did a great job of keeping the audience engaged while always laughing. Although the plot seems to be similar to any Hallmark movie, the scriptwriting and acting gave it a unique feel.
All in all, the movie is filled with uplifting touches and emphasis on the thin line between love and hate. Throughout the movie, we watched these characters develop from clueless enemies to passionate lovers. With the beautiful visuals, acting, and soundtrack we believe this movie is a must see! “Anyone but You” is a great movie to watch when looking for a climactic twist on a wistful classic.
