As the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical “Wicked” gets ready for its fall 2024 release, excitement is increasing among students at Wakeland High School. With an amazing cast and a fascinating two-part structure, many are eager to see how the backstory of Oz will come to the big screen.
“I’m really excited to see Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero,” says Director Cantrell, referring to the actor known for his role in “Bridgerton.” “The world-building of Oz looks incredible in the trailers, especially since it’s hard to get that perspective on Broadway.” Fans have been interested in the film’s direction, which is set to be divided into two parts by acts. “I hope it’s received well,” Cantrell adds. “It might not be huge, but it’s definitely going to be a long ride.”
Among the star-studded cast, Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda has triggered mixed reactions. “She’s a good fit because she wanted this role for so long and proved herself,” says Melissa, a sophomore. “But her baby voice can be a bit annoying.”
Meanwhile, Eva expressed optimism about Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Grande’s co-star. “I’m really excited to see her in this role; she has a lot of talent.” The cinematography and costume design also caught the attention of this student. “The trailers look well put together,” Eva says, highlighting the quality of production. “I think the directors will do a great job immersing us in this world.”
Sophomore Roman says the depth added to the story. “I love how it makes the Wicked Witch less evil and gives her a backstory,” he said. “It’s interesting to see original pieces from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ incorporated into this narrative.”
As the release date approaches, fans are talking about potential cameos, particularly from Kristin Chenoweth, the original Broadway Glinda. “I think I saw her in the new promo, and it’s started theories about her return,” Sydney Skiles, a junior, mentioned, “That would refer back to the Broadway musical.”
As these students stay on the edge of their seats for “Wicked” to come out, students at Wakeland are ready to watch this hyped-up movie and its themes of friendship and self-discovery. With a mix of excitement and nostalgia, so many are ready to see this story’s new depiction.
