With the holidays around the corner, the Wakeland Student Council and the Wakeland Theatre department spread winter cheer by decorating the hallways. Theatre decorated to promote their musical White Christmas, and StuCo also created 12 days of Christmas dress-up days.
“Student council has decorated for Christmas like this for a while now, but this year some other classes and clubs pitched in as well,” student council advisor Mrs. Lancaster said.
The decorations, including lights in the entryway to the school and by the cafeteria, were all done by student council. Student council put the decorations and lights up during their classes. They reused lights that had decorated the school during homecoming.
“We have slowly built up our collection of decorations for many years so we already had almost everything we needed to decorate,” student council president Carter Short said.
The Wakeland Theatre department also helped contribute to the holiday spirit around Wakeland. The winter musical was Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. They promoted their show by adding paper snowflakes to the walls, hanging them from the ceilings, and transforming the auditorium lobby with Christmas trees. These carefully planned decorations not only improved their show, they also contributed to Wakeland’s spirit.
“We have used many after-school hours as well as our Theatre Productions class for planning and putting up decor,” tech theatre teacher Ms. Cantrell said.
The theatre department even coordinated the opening night of White Christmas with the blue and white dress-up day last Thursday. This was one of many dress-up days including festive sock day, sweater day, flannel day, and PJ day. Many students and staff around Wakeland have gone all out for these days.
“Everything that’s going on at Wakeland right now, like the [Legacy Line] Winter Showcase, White Christmas, the decorated halls, and the dress-up days have really been getting me more into the holiday spirit,” sophomore Isis Nem said.
