Wakeland’s cafeteria will be getting an extra $2,000 to support their school breakfast program thanks to the efforts of several Wakeland students who entered the 2023 AdVenture Capital Domino’s Effect contest to promote child nutrition. Wakeland was one of three schools in the country and the only school from Texas to win the grant money.
Wakeland has the lowest school breakfast participation in the entire district. The group submitted a written proposal about their plan to help solve this problem by hosting a nutrition fair to promote school breakfast and hopefully increase participation rates. The nutrition fair will be held throughout power lunch during the first week of March, which is National School Breakfast Week.
“It will be a great opportunity to promote our school breakfast, while also appreciating our amazing cafeteria staff,” said senior Laura Summers.
The $2,000 prize will be used mostly to promote the nutrition fair, including paying for posters and fun prizes for Wakeland students.
“We’re trying to reach as many people as possible and make it something fun. Even if you don’t end up trying school breakfast, you’ll at least know that it’s an easily accessible option to take advantage of before class each day,” said senior Riley McCain.
The group is working on ideas to make the event appealing to students, and to ensure that as many people as possible can participate and learn about school breakfast.
“We’re going to do samples during lunch, and I’m excited to see if people engage because I feel like that will appeal to high schoolers,” said junior Ireland Jackson.
The prize also included a trip to Domino’s headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The group will meet the CEO of Domino’s and enjoy a free trip to Michigan from Feb. 26-28 of this year.
“I’m excited to meet with the Domino’s executives and see how everything works behind the scenes,” said Jackson.
Make sure to look out for upcoming information about the nutrition fair, and be sure to take advantage of Wakeland’s school breakfast program.
