Today marks the twenty fourth anniversary of September 11, 2001, where the World Trade Center was the focus of lethal terrorist attacks. This tragedy claimed the lives of 2,996 people, and every year we take time on this day to honor them and the first responders who risked their lives to save as many people as they could.
Although the attack occurred in New York, there was worldwide support for the United States. Buckingham palace played the National Anthem, international newspapers were expressing their sympathy, and world leaders such as the chancellor of Germany called the attacks a “declaration of war and an attack on the world.” Because of the attacks, many countries implemented anti terrorism legislation, and froze many international affairs in fear of the perpetrator of the attacks, Osama Bin Laden, targeting them next. “I was teaching theatre at the time, and the students didn’t really take it seriously as it didn’t directly affect them,” says Mrs. Steinhauser. “But it was definitely a somber moment for all of those who understood the gravity of the situation.” The outpouring support for the United States strengthened our relations with international leaders, and they also sent supplies to help with the injured.
We remember all the civilians, first responders, and animals who passed away in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “It really shows their character and how selfless they are,” Says Senior Cianna Anthony. “They risked their lives for strangers, and they’re American heroes.” While it may have been one of the darkest days in American history, we make sure to take time for them and their sacrifices they made for our country.
