The Texas Parent Bill of Rights also known as the Senate bill 12 makes sure that parents have to sign a form that their students can get non-emergency care by their school staff.
This bill was issued on September 1 2025 and the new law covers minor injuries like band-aids, vision screenings, hearing tests, over the counter meds etc
“If I don’t have consent from the parents then I can’t treat the children at all” School Nurse Jamie Mendz said.
The people covered in this law are nurses, teachers, counselors, assistants, and athletic trainers. People argue that requiring consent for non-emergency care brings schools in line with existing policies on medication, and mental health referrals.
“It can affect any kind of treatment that they would get here if they don’t sign that,so you might go home because I can’t take your temperature,” School Nurse Jamie Mendz said.
Overall, the Texas law on non-emergency care treatment affects students, and school caretakers.
