Bouncing Back Into Season
The Wolverines return to the basketball court and get ready for the season.
With basketball season up and running, the Wolverines have been working hard on and off to court to hit the season head on.
“We have been practicing in and out of the gym for months, just trying to prepare our minds and bodies for games,” girls varsity player senior Kate Steubing said.
The girls team has been practicing 6 days a week for around 2 hours to get ready for their games.
The team has grown close from learning new techniques to supporting each other on and off the court.
“We are a very close team on and off the court, which is what makes this team so special,” Steubing said.
The girls bond off the court by spending time with each other after practices or by going to dinners together.
“We do team dinners each month. On Saturdays, we go out to lunch after practice,” girls varsity player senior Lexie Evans said.
Just like any other sports team, Wakeland Basketball has experienced some hardships throughout their journey into the season.
“We’ve had some ups and downs but it’s mainly been good,” Evans said.
“It’s been tough but we are fighting through it,” girls varsity player senior Kailyn Futrell said.
Wakeland has faced many tough opponents such as Liberty High School and Lone Star High School, but their greatest competitor has been Memorial High School.
“Our hardest opponent has definitely been Memorial. They are great on defense and have amazing team work,” Steubing said.
The girls are currently ranked 10th in the district.
Not only have the girls been working hard on the court, but boys have also been putting it in the effort.
“A lot of it’s been just, especially with the new roster that we have and not a lot of guys returning, kind of building a new system, getting to know our roles, and getting tighter as a team,” boys varsity player junior Luke Lee said.
The boys bond with each other through team dinners and spending time together off of the court.
With a new team and a fresh start, the boys have started off rough! Struggling with the chemistry of new members.
“[The season] started off kind of rough. We had a bit of a patch where we had to learn and grow, especially as individuals to find out who we were. Especially in the last few weeks, we’ve grown a lot and we’re a completely different team now. I feel like that in the long run has helped us out a whole bunch,” Lee said.
Despite their hardships, the boys were able to overcome them and are now ranked 2nd in the district.
“I think we’ve put ourselves at a really good spot. We’ve just got to take advantage of the opportunity,” Lee said.
Both teams are striving to become better and dominate the court with a goal of eventually winning District.
