Find a Way
With the new season starting up, the Wakeland Soccer teams are living by their new motto.
Wakeland is buzzing as the new year brings in a new semester and new season of soccer with hopes for both teams to advance to state once again. The boys and girls representing Wakeland on the field are prepared once again to bring home some more hardware and take state.
This year’s boys soccer team is off to a hot start, going 6-1 and ranking third in the district. The boys also seem to dominate at home as they have gone undefeated this year on Wakeland turf. They have scored an impressive 20 goals so far and have only allowed 9 goals against. Wakeland is hoping to repeat their success from last year when they went 24-1-1 and won the state championship. All signs are pointing to an exciting season ahead for the boys wearing orange and blue.
The girls have also been proving themselves on the field this year. They are currently 5-1 and ranked fourth in the district. The girls have found the back of the net 10 times this year, and impressively have allowed the fewest goals in the district with 4. The expectations are also high for this team because of their 20-3-3 season last year and their runner up performance in the state championship. The girls are out for revenge this year as they attempt to prove that they are the best in the state.
Senior Sydney Deckert believes they have a shot at the championship this year. “I feel like this team has a really good chance…we all want to fight together and go back and win this year”.
At the end of the day there are only so many numbers, expectations, and past seasons that put pressure on these athletes for the season. All that matters is this year’s teams taking the field each night with the state championship trophy in the back of their minds. Wakeland has shown time and time again that they can be punched, battered and bruised, but the Wolverines always find a way to the top.
