Soccer: It’s a Family Sport

Forget sibling rivalry! Sisters sophomore Dayleigh and senior Olivia Bos encourage each other and play varsity soccer for Wakeland.

Most siblings hope they never have to go to school with each other, let alone play on the same team as one another.

But, these siblings are different.

The Bezdek twins and Bos sisters love playing for the same team at Wakeland.

Seniors Brennan and Linae Bezdek are twins who both play on varsity soccer and have an older brother, Bryson, who once played on Wakeland varsity.

Having an older brother who played soccer inspired both Brennan and Linae to be the best player they could be.

“I have seen my brother play at every level and have tried to imitate his play. He has been a role model for me and encourages me to be better everyday,” Brennan said.

“My brothers have always influenced me my entire life. I deeply admire them and [their] positive work ethic,” Linae said.

But the Bezdeks are not the only siblings who play for the same team. Olivia and Dayleigh Bos both play for the girls varsity soccer team with Linae. Dayleigh, only being a sophomore, got the opportunity to play with her sister before she graduates this year.

“Playing on the same team as my sister makes it feel as if we’ve been playing on the same team since day one,” Olivia said. “But due to the age cutoff in club soccer, it’s been nearly impossible to ever find ourselves playing on the same team.”

Soccer is a very competitive sport and some take losing harder than others.

“I’d say Brennan takes [losing] the hardest. With Bryson making high achievements through high school, both Brennan and I have had high standards to meet,” Linae said. “However, Brennan is always the type of person who works hard and inevitably succeeds.”

Playing the same sport in the family can motivate each other to strive to be the best they can.

“[I think Olivia encouraging me to play soccer is more a] competitive aspect motivating me to beat her at everything soccer-wise,” Dayleigh said.

With the Bezdek twins and Olivia Bos being seniors this year, it may be a little weird for these siblings to no longer be playing for the same team.

“I would say that it’s [going to be] weirder not having her in the house stealing the shower. Other than that, the field will probably feel empty for a little while,” Dayleigh said.

“It will be a little different since we have been together for our whole lives, but we plan on going to college relatively close so it won’t be too hard on either of us,” Brennan said.

Soccer has brought these families closer together and no one can take it away from them.

“Soccer connects us all and continuously brings us all together,” Linae said.
