The 1st Round – Wakeland varsity boys and girls soccer dominate the first two rounds of playoffs. “If we keep having the heart, desire, and drive, we should go pretty far,” Deckert said. The girls claims the title of Area District champs. While the boys claimed the title of Bi-District Champs.

With playoffs picking up, the Wakeland boys and girls soccer teams have already dominated their first few rounds.

“We prepared by trying to do our best in districts and showing up to each practice, ready to get better each day,” varsity player senior Nate Bowman said.

The boys played Weslaco East High School on Mar. 24 and won with a score of 4-0 in round 1 of the playoffs.

In round 2, the boys beat Hillcrest High School with a score of 4-0 on Mar. 29.

“I think we are doing really well right now and will continue to do well up until the very end,” Bowman said.

The girls beat Wylie East High School 1-0 in round 1 of playoffs on Mar. 24.

“I’d say the hardest opponent we’ve faced has been Wylie East in the first round. The wind was insufferable and it pushed us to adapt,” varsity player senior Linae Bezdek said. “They had a solid defense and a creative offense to match.”

The girls battled against Wylie East on the field but were able to finish the game strongly and won.

“I think we will do good for the rest of the season if we continue to work hard,” varsity player junior Riley Pettigrew said. “Our goal for this season [is] to do the best we [can] in every game and make it to state like last year.”

In round 2, the girls were up against Creekview High School.

With a great assist from junior Katy Gregson, senior Cori Cochran was able to defeat the odds and score the winning goal.

 Leaving the final score 1-0.

“We’ve prepared for the playoffs by going in and playing our games and taking every single game seriously,” varsity player captain senior Sydney Deckert said.

Due to an ACL injury, Deckert, an outside back on the field, has been her team’s number one supporter since the injury.

“This year we have had a few struggles especially [when I] tore my ACL. So I’ve been out and just trying to fill in those spots and putting people in new positions,” Deckert said.

Both varsity teams will be advancing to round 3 of the playoffs.

The varsity boys and girls will be versing WT White on Fri., Apr. 1 at Eagle Mustang Stadium in Richardson. Girls will be at 6 p.m. and boys will be at 8 p.m. for round 3.
