As the Wakeland football team looks to kick off against district rival Lone Star, they find themselves 3-1 overall and 1-1 in district with their one loss coming from their other district rival, Reedy. Throughout the season, they have relied on great performances from first-year varsity players as well as returning players. One of these first-year players, sophomore safety Grayson Myer, was recognized as the Dallas Morning News Week 2 defensive player of the week for 11 tackles, an interception, and a kickoff return touchdown in their 34-27 win over FW Brewer on August 31.
“It was pretty crazy [to get the award]. I’ve just tried to stay consistent: not get too high in the highs and not get too low in the lows,” Grayson Myer said.
As Grayson Myer has looked to be balanced, he has received help from senior quarterback and brother Brennan Myer and senior wide receiver Ashdyn Kahouch to ensure that he is not letting his emotions get the best of him.
“They’ve really just shown me the way. If I ever need help, I just go to them,” Grayson Myer said. “They were sophomores once on varsity, so they know what it feels like.”
Now a senior, Kahouch feels responsible for guiding all of the younger players as well as Grayson Myer.
“I finally have that role where everyone else looks up to me, especially younger guys, and I am able to provide an example for them,” Kahouch said.
Despite their good play throughout the season, they lost 35-28 to district rival Reedy in their last game. In the loss, they suffered from mental lapses, causing them to give up the most points they have all season.
“It was mostly just mental mistakes. Going into the the Lone Star game, we’re going to try to emphasize special teams even more so that we don’t make any mental mistakes,” Grayson Myer said.
As Grayson Myer looks to help the team improve, he understands how he needs to play.
“For me, I just have to get my eyes out of the back field. On one touchdown, I put myself in a bad position,” Grayson Myer said. “As safeties and corners, we got to get the pass game first then the run game.”
Going into the rivalry game, they also look to be better on offense.
“We just have to find holes and gaps in their defense. Depending on whatever they throw at us, we’ll just adjust on the fly. With Brennan as our senior quarterback, he can help us out,” Grayson Myer said.
As they look to bounce back against Lone Star tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Ford Center, they will need the fans’ support.
“I definitely get excited to play better because everyone’s eyes are on me and the team,” Kahouch said.
With each game being a new theme for the students, this week’s theme is to wear orange, one of Wakeland’s school colors.
“I’m pretty excited because it’s a super easy theme,” senior student Frank Miller said. “I’m hoping a lot of people will show up in all orange.”
