With only 45 seconds played in the first quarter, senior quarterback Brennan Myer received the snap and scanned the field for a target. He then found senior running back Cooper Snyder and delivered the ball for a 34-yard touchdown pass, giving the Wolverines their first of eight touchdowns in a 56-0 victory against Liberty on October 6, 2023.
“When we scored in the first 45 seconds, it definitely brought a confidence boost to our team, and it really got us off to a hot start,” sophomore quarterback Jayden Maples said.
As they built on the hot start, they found themselves up 42-0 after a 4-yard touchdown run from Snyder near the end of the first half. With Snyder’s play to close the half, they had scored more in the first half of this game than they had scored in both halves of each of their previous two games.
“Coming into the game, we just had a lot of confidence to execute the game plan. [We knew that] if we got out fast, we could run away with the game,” Maples said.
After having a huge lead to start the second half, Maples saw some playing time and completed two passes for a total of 15 passing yards. With a couple completions in this game and a few snaps in other wins, Maples has built confidence with experience in games and guidance from senior quarterback Brennan Myer outside of games.
“It’s a dream come true to play on varsity, but it can’t really happen without me looking up to my older [teammates],” Maples said. “Brennan is a great leader and is one of the best that has come through the program. He inspires me, and I try to be like him as a leader every day.”
Now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in district, they look to carry their confidence into their next game against Centennial on Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Toyota Stadium.
“They have a great game plan. If we come well prepared to the game, we can get started fast like we did last week,” Maples said.
This week’s game will also be Wakeland’s homecoming game, an important time to show school spirit. The team will need your support so make sure to buy tickets at https://tickets.friscoisd.org/ and arrive in homecoming spirit.
“It’s very exciting to hear everyone come support us. It gives us a boost of confidence, and it just makes the overall experience better,” Maples said.
