Looking to claim sole possession of first place in district, the Lady Wolverines faced a double-digit deficit with only a quarter to play against Reedy. In the final quarter, the Wolverines struggled with Reedy’s press and turned the ball over twice in the final minute and a half of the game, resulting in a 41-29 loss on January 16, 2024.
“We were not able to get through the press, which slowed us down,” assistant coach Mainord said.
As the team looks to play better against the press in upcoming games, they look to have more confidence in each other.
“We need to start trusting each other more,” senior Maddie Hardwick said.
With the team only scoring 29 points in the game, they scored the least amount of points in a game since the loss to Heritage on November 20, 2023 and will look to focus more on defense creating offense.
“We usually press pretty tough and get turnovers off of that and [are] able to score off of that,” Mainord said. “We had a difficult time with that on Tuesday.”
Despite the loss, Mainord remains positive in the team’s growth from previous years and potential.
“We’ve really improved on [listening] in the past year, and it’s helped us be as successful as we have been this season,” Mainord said. “It was just an off game on Tuesday.”
Through the loss, Mainord hopes the team finds a valuable lesson in developing perseverance.
“We’ve been talking a lot about grit this year. We’ve gone through a book study [about] learning to fight through adversity,” Mainord said. “Tuesday was a good example and test of that, and how we come back from that loss is going to show how gritty we are.”
Now 21-7 overall and 6-2 in district, they look to bounce back in their next game against Newman Smith tonight at 5:45 p.m. at Newman Smith High School. The team will need the fans’ support so purchase tickets at https://tickets.friscoisd.org/.
“We got flustered the other night, and we were doing things that we don’t normally do,” Mainord said. “As long as we stay on track and keep doing the little things right, it should transfer over into the game.”
