You can find them on the sidelines of any game, the Wakeland cheerleaders are always ready to support other teams with their show-stopping cheers and tireless school spirit.
They are the one team at Wakeland that consistently shows up for all other sports, but they also find the time to showcase their abilities and blow the competition away at their own events.
Wakeland cheer competes annually at UIL competitions in Fort Worth, and this year they returned home with some incredible achievements. The team placed 2nd in crowd-leading, and they finished 7th overall in state this year.
“I felt a lot of excitement. Not only for me, but for the freshmen, sophomores, and even the seniors because it’s their last year,” junior Sara Cashman said.
A core part of cheerleading is building a community with people on the team. Cheer is a demanding sport that requires a lot of dedication, but the passion of cheerleaders keeps them motivated to continue working hard in the sport they love.
“I love the opportunity to be involved in my school and be involved in the spirit,” junior Maddie Sullivan said.
The cheer team’s success was observed by the entire Wakeland community, but celebrating as a team made the experience even more special for the girls.
“I was with Ava Campbell and Kaitlyn Gordon, when we found out that we made finals, and we were jumping up and down with joy,” sophomore Liv Lisi said.
These were both well-deserved awards for our cheerleaders, and they will surely be working hard to continue their legacy in the next few years. Be sure to support Wakeland cheer, as they continue to show up for our athletics.
