At the beginning of this school year, senior Evelyn Matusiak created De-stress club to promote healthy well-being. With the club now meeting every first Thursday of each month, Wakeland students get to take time to focus on their mental health.
“I created De-stress club to create an environment where students can relax for a while. I realized that having a friend to talk to or just relaxing for a bit helped my stress,” Matusiak said.
At their third meeting of the year, De-stress club reviewed different health care techniques that help ease anxiety including breathing techniques (2 quick inhales and 1 long exhale), walking, writing, and dilating gaze when angry.
“De-stress club is a nice break from the chaos of homework and assignments. It is relaxing to get to spend time with friends,” senior Kate Woodford said.
Along with learning calming methods, De-stress club also gives students a way to relax through doing fun activities. At previous sessions, they have colored pictures, watched movies, and stretched. Also, as the meetings continue, they are developing numerous new pastimes for their members.
“As an activities officer, I’m planning on making very hands-on activities that are fun for everyone, making sure the environment is fun and as de-stressful as possible,” senior Alexa Ruiz said.
As De-stress club aspires to be a welcoming group for all its members, students seeking a comfortable, warm environment to spend their first half of power lunch can keep up with the club’s instagram, @destress_club_wolverine, and join the remind through the code: @dest3ss.
