Twinkling lights and bright stars fall upon Wakeland, as prom season nears. Seniors spend weeks finding the perfect outfit and deciding who to go with, all to feel the bliss of dancing with close friends throughout the night. Prom is an event that many seniors look forward to, as their high school journey comes to an end, as one night where they can put aside the looming thoughts of college or their future, and spend time with people they may never see again. This event is even considered a right of passage for teenagers before they are sent off to embark on their next journey.
Senior year can be stressful and emotional, yet the euphoric experience of prom, put together by staff, provides a great way for students to have fun and spend time with friends. Providing a memorable experience to seniors as their final goodbye can be difficult. It starts with picking the right theme that not only sets the tone for the rest of the night but becomes part of lasting memories.
“This year’s theme is “Night Under the Stars” because not only is it fun, but it is elegant and cool like the seniors here at Wakeland! I love the fact that this is the last big dance that the seniors will have as a class. I am also excited to see everyone dressed up, and I am looking forward to seeing everyone looking beautiful and handsome,” Assistant Principal Mrs. Sully said.
As April nears, many girls are looking for their perfect dress for prom. They strive to find a dress that makes them look and feel their best, with the perfect shoes and jewelry to match. The dress shopping process can take time, with many dress stores offering a huge selection. Going into a dress store unprepared could make the experience stressful, with so many different styles and colors to choose from. However, in-store stylists can help make sure that you walk out with a dress that compliments you perfectly.
“I love the smile on [a customer’s] face when they know this is the dress; I’m living through the girls, through my customers,” owner of formal wear store Darla Foxx said.
On the other hand, guys also spend time finding their suits for prom. Some may take the easier approach and order their suits online, while others prefer shopping in person. Suits offer a range of materials, colors, lengths, and buttons, which could add up to quite an overwhelming process, especially when going into the store with an empty mind. Walking in with a confident mind and a strong attitude can help anyone leave the store with a tuxedo that suits them best.
“When I go looking for suits, I typically look for darker colors that are pretty simplistic. Since I am going with a date, I am planning to coordinate my tie to match her dress. The whole process would typically take me an hour since I know what I want beforehand, but I like to examine different styles,” senior Blake Vo said.
It can seem like only yesterday that all the seniors experienced the rising of the sun together, and in a couple of months, they will walk across the stage and watch the sunset for the last time as high schoolers. As seniors venture into the next stage of their lives, they can look back on their high school lives and cherish special memories, reminiscing on prom night under the stars.
