Homecoming is coming early this year with the dance being held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in the Wakeland cafeteria. This move has shifted all homecoming related events, and the homecoming football game will be held on Thursday, August 29. Traditionally held in mid-October, the early festivities at Wakeland have sparked different opinions about the new timeline.
“I don’t like it,” junior Sarah Carter said. ”Homecoming is the biggest game of the year, and it’s the first game of this year. All the freshmen are just getting used to it, so the energy won’t be what we want it to be.”
However, not all of the feedback is negative. Some students are enthusiastic about the change.
“I feel amazing about the game being homecoming!” senior Taylor Garten said.
The theme for the dance this year is Wakechella. You can purchase your tickets through online school fees, for $25 until August 26. You can also buy them at the door on August 31 for $30.
Homecoming Dress Up Week is from August 26-30, with fun new themes, including Soccer Mom vs BBQ Dad and Anything But a Backpack Day.
“I like the dress up days this year because there are different themes for everyone to be included in, and they aren’t basic,” junior Neila Hurd said.
Students also report that they feel more motivated to participate in themes the diverse theme selection this year.
“I think the themes are a lot better than last year, and they encourage me to participate,” junior Haley Schmidt said.
Homecoming also offers the exciting opportunity for two special Wolverines to be crowned Homecoming Queen and King.
“This is a really cool opportunity for my girlfriend, Sophie, and I,” king candidate Conner Speiden said.
The lifelong memories that high school royalty brings is a motivating factor for these soon-to-be graduated seniors.
“It means a lot to me that I was gifted the support of enough people to get me to this position, and I will cherish these memories forever thanks to my friends who helped me get here,” queen candidate Ireland Jackson said.
Happy homecoming wolverines! Be sure to show your school spirit this week!
