Millions of kids each year are left without basic necessities. As the holiday season is approaching, the importance of giving back is becoming evident. According to the Salvation Army, the Angel Tree program puts necessities under the tree for almost 1 million children in a typical year.
Students of Wakeland are giving back through The Angel Tree organization, which provides both gifts and essentials to children in need.
Wakeland teachers are also embracing the holiday tradition. Ms. Lancaster, the student council sponsor and career and technical education department leader, is actively collecting Angel Tree donations throughout the school.
“What I like about Angel Tree is that it affects Frisco, so it’s for the Frisco community and for the Frisco ISD children,” said Ms. Lancaster
When participating in the Angel Tree Drive, donors pick the child they want to sponsor or they get a random child from the community.
“So, each angel we receive, they give us their needs and they give us the wish, so we try to make sure all their needs are fulfilled, and at least a couple of their wishes are fulfilled,” said Ms. Lancaster.
Students who wish to contribute to the Angel Tree Drive can refer to Ms. Lancaster, “Students can adopt an angel […], but they’re are lots of angels that go unanswered, you can find them at local churches, a lot of stores, you’ll see the Christmas tree with the tags and that’s how they can adopt an angel.”
