For their service project, Wakeland’s National Honor Society is fundraising and spreading awareness for the American Cancer Society and their Relay for Life initiative. Relay for Life is a walking fundraiser to support loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Currently, the American Cancer Society has raised more than $400 million for cancer research, and Wakeland is working to support this fight against cancer.
“Some girls in our group, their grandpa just passed away from liver cancer, and we got information about his process. We raised 262 dollars,” junior Reese Rackers said.
National Honor Society’s big fundraising event took place at Wakeland High School on March 25-26, 2025, during power lunch. The goal was to raise money to support cancer research, but they also aimed to spread awareness about different types of cancer. Students lined up in the hallway, presenting research on a cancer of choice and informing others about the cancer and why they chose to research it. Some groups even sold baked goods or other products to earn more donations.
In total, Wakeland NHS students have raised almost $15,000 to support the American Cancer Society.
“It was a great experience where we got to raise money for a cause! It was fun getting to connect with the community and work as a team!” junior Sarah Cashman said.
