Fender benders and hit-and-runs are becoming a major concern in Wakeland High School’s parking lots, according to Student Resource Officer Brown.
“The biggest thing here at Wakeland over the last two years is our wrecks,” School Resource Officer Brown said. “We just had our first hit and run and it’s the second day of school.”
Speeding is one of the largest contributors to parking lot crashes at Wakeland.
“Students come in for late arrival, then hit that back curb going 40 mph, which is crazy for a parking lot,” Officer Brown said. “Your reaction time for speeding reduces immensely.”
While speeding may seem unavoidable, Brown urged students to remember the risks.
“You gotta weigh the risk and the reward,” he said. “Does it really benefit you by speeding out of here and causing a wreck?”
The parking lot is one of the most important places to follow traffic laws, practice driving etiquette and stay alert to other cars and pedestrians.
As more drivers fill the lot, safety remains essential for protecting not only your own life but also the lives of fellow Wolverines
