Jack-o-lanterns, pies and pigs; for this local pig rescue pumpkins are proving prudent for the prosperity of their pigs. We interviewed founder and owner of My Pig Filled Life. My Pig Filled Life was inspired by the lack of rescue facilities in the East Texas area, this non-profit mini-pig rescue was founded by Melanie Moreau.
It began when she first got her pig from local livestock, intrigued by their cuteness. Soon enough, she found her passion in wanting to educate others on pigs and provide for them. In the spirit of the fall season and the holidays, pumpkins and pigs clash together for a purpose.
“We started “Pumpkin for Purpose” about five years ago and the reason that we do this and why it’s so wonderful for our Sanctuary is several reasons. One, pumpkins are a nice treat and, you know, it’s kind of something frivolous we wouldn’t go out and buy so they’re going to get a nice little snack that’s one of their favorites to eat. In addition having the pumpkins collected around the DFW area is going to give us extra feed so it’s going to keep our feed cost down during the winter when we’ll typically have to increase by the number of pellets.”
The donation of pumpkins for the My Pig Filled Life sanctuary benefits the pigs in several ways. The sanctuary can save money on feed while feeding their pig’s nutritious pumpkins which helps put on more belly fat, helping them regulate body temperature just in time for the chilly season and benefitting the pig’s health.
“We use pumpkins to supplement and put some belly fat on [the pigs] because pigs don’t sweat so they can’t regulate temp well so this is just extra protection for the winter.”
If you want a better purpose for your pumpkins after the fall holiday season, consider donating to pumpkins for a purpose located east of Frisco at 810 VZ County Rd 3815, Wills Point, TX 75169.
Not only can people help by donating pigs, but they can help by giving them a home. Make sure to check out the website for more information on how to adopt a pig or volunteer.
