Welcome to another WINCAST episode on the Wolverine Information Network. I’m your host, Gavin Short, with me is Jackson Ryan. Today we’re tackling one of the most heated rivalries in college football the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.
Absolutely. This rivalry is often referred to as the Red River showdown has a history that dates back to 1900.
It’s not just about the game, it’s about pride, tradition, and bragging rights. Right?
The game is played annually at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which adds another layer of intensity. The atmosphere is electric, with fans from both sides tailgating and creating a sea of red and burnt orange. And it’s not just about the game itself. There are some legendary moments and players that have come out of this rivalry.
I mean, who could forget the 1975 game where OU won 24-14? Or the epic 2000 matchup with the Sooners crushed Texas 63 to 14? Those were great games for OU, but Texas has had its moments, too.
The 2005 game where Vince Young led Texas to a 45 to 12 victory, is still talked about today. It marked the comeback of Texas football.
And then there’s the recent years where we’ve seen both teams struggle at times but still come out swinging against each other. It seems like every game is a battle, regardless of the records.
Exactly. The stakes are always high and the fans are passionate about the rivalry.
You see it in the way, the way fans trash talk and rally around their teams.
And let’s not forget the recruiting battles. Both schools are top tier programs and they’re always fighting for the best talent in Texas and beyond. Definitely, the rivalry extends beyond just the game. It impacts the entire season for both teams. Losing this matchup can affect recruiting and fan pride. What it does and the friendly and sometimes not so friendly battle between the fan bases is something special.
It’s all a part of what makes college football so unique. Speaking of that, how do you think the upcoming conference changes will affect the rivalry?
That’s a great point with you in Texas moving into the SEC, the rivalry will take on a new aspect. We’ll face tougher competition week and week out, but the passion of this rivalry is going anywhere.
Agreed. It’ll be fascinating to see how they adapt while keeping the spirit of the Red River showdown alive. So what do you think will take the next match up?
Honestly, it’s hard to predict, but both teams have the talent to with. It’ll come down to execution on game day. Can’t wait to see it. And that wraps up our discussion for today.
Be sure to tune into the next time for more on the WINCAST. Thanks for listening and remember. It’s more than just a game. It’s a rivalry.
