Preparing for Persistent Colder Weather in Texas

WINTV reporter Nik French talks to Meteorologist Dominic Brown about what to look after when preparing for cold weather: Pets, Plants, People, and Pipes.

Drip your Taps.

Layer up.

Snowmageddon.

Many Texans are unfamiliar with these terms during the sweltering heat of the summer and fall. But, with the persistent cold weather people are finding new ways to stay warm.

We talked to Dominic Brown, Meteorologist from CBS11 to see how Texans can stay warm during the winter season.

“What’s interesting about Texas weather is that we can see extremes. Not only do we see extremes in the summertime, with triple digit heat, but in the winter we can see wind chills in the negatives.” Dominic Brown gave us tips on how what to prioritize when preparing for cold fronts or freezing weather.

The four things everyone should be aware of during a freeze are the four Ps: pets, plants, people, pipes.

“We always talk about the pets; of course they need a warm place to be and bring them indoors. We need the plants, anything that’s tender sensitive you need to bring those indoors or cover them up not with plastic. The people: elderly neighbors make sure everybody’s okay and warm and then the pipes. Pipes can freeze or they can burst and so folks need to know what they need to do around their home in order to keep those pipes from bursting and becoming a bigger problem and they will be without water and things of that nature. So we always make sure we think about the four Ps: the pets, the plants, the people, and the pipes.”

If you’re ever unsure what to do to stay warm many sources online like CNN include different options of how to stay out of the cold from wearing layers of clothes to eating a hot meal or to taking a warm shower or bath. While the cold weather is not native to Texas it is still important to know what to do during these winter seasons in order to stay healthy and warm.
