Wakeland Basketball Crushes Competition

Mental strength, toughness, execution, and effort… This is the motto and standard the Wakeland basketball team holds itself to whenever they step on the floor.

The Wolverines started this season by winning six out of the first seven district games, proving they are one of the strongest teams in the district.

This has been one of the hottest starts for Wakeland basketball in district play in several years.

“We always knew we could be the best team in the district. Now that we have achieved that, our goal is to maintain that and keep moving forward,” senior player Josh Lastre said.

The team built more chemistry in the offseason which is leading to the success on the court.

“They are a brotherhood. And they are such good friends outside of basketball that it improves how they play,” senior team manager Edjerin Steele said.

The athletes constantly worked out during the off season to build that agility and strength to compete well with opposing teams.

After workouts, players returned to the gym to perfect their basketball skills which is leading to the team’s success.

“The standard here is practice how you play and I believe that since we compete so hard in practice, it is making things click more on the court,” Lastre said.

But with the success, some are curious to see if the team can maintain the top spot throughout  the whole season.

“I believe that everyone thinks we are gonna finish on top because we go into every game confident that we can beat anyone,” Lastre said.

If the team continues at this rate, they could for sure be a good playoff team in the district and potentially in Texas.
