Many Wakeland students go to the gym frequently to better themselves physically and sometimes even mentally. The dedication that it takes to see results in the weight room is much more intense than some can even imagine. Nevertheless, senior Nick Doros has shown that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.

Doros is part of the powerlifting program. Powerlifting seems to go under the radar and not many students understand what goes into it.

“Most students don’t realize the ins and outs of powerlifting. Practices are at 7 a.m. three days a week. The meets can go very long and are very time consuming,” powerlifting head coach, Coach Isom, said.

Doros started powerlifting because some of his friends were already in it.

“[A]fter going to the gym with them for a bit… they convinced me to compete at Wakeland,” Doros said.

Even though he has only been involved in powerlifting for a year, Nick has already made impressive progress in all aspects of his lifts.

“Nick has done a great job,” Coach Isom said. “He has really improved since the beginning of the season and his hard work is paying off.”

Recently, Doros, along with other students around the district, competed in the regional powerlifting meet on Mar. 5 at Keller Central High School.

”I was a little bit nervous at first. My first couple lifts weren’t great so I knew I had to step it up later in the competition,” Doros said about the regional competition.

Doros finished 2nd in the entire meet and qualified for the state powerlifting meet. He broke multiple personal records and garnered the attention of teachers and students around the school. There was a sendoff held just for him, with the entire school getting together to celebrate his previous accomplishments and wish him luck for state.

Hard work paid off as he headed to state on Mar. 26 in Abilene, Tx at the Expo Center. Doros finished with a 485 pound squat, a 275 pound bench press, and a 425 pound deadlift.
