The Wolverine Information Network (WIN) is expanding from TV into podcasts! Students are taking their broadcasting skills to the next level with the launch of their own podcast network called WINCAST, short for the Wolverine Information Network Podcast. The network will feature several podcast episodes hosted and produced by students in the Wakeland broadcast journalism classes, known as WINTV.
Podcasts have exploded in popularity in recent years as a medium for consuming news and entertainment. An estimated 42% of Americans ages 12 and older have listened to podcasts in the past month according to the Pew Research Center. News radio is still the most listened-to radio format (Nielsen, 2024,) and WIN is bringing news content to Wakeland through more frequent, audio episodes.
The WINCAST will allow students to get experience in radio, podcast and audio production in general. The first podcast from WIN is called “Baking it Historical,” and focuses on the invention of panettone bread, baked by our own reporters Ella Brookshire and Emily Stephens. Upcoming shows will provide entertainment reviews, sports analysis, a backstage pass to the Wolverine Information Network’s daily operations.
WINCAST is currently available on WakelandAccess.com. Episodes will drop weekly throughout the remainder of the school year.
