Coming off a 4-2 victory against The Colony High School on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the Wakeland girls soccer team finishes the season undefeated with a 19-0-2 overall record and is headed to the playoffs. In the win, senior midfielder LG Moncrief, sophomore defender Sophie Altieri, sophomore defender Anna Mayer, and senior winger Dayleigh Bos contributed with a goal each.
“Everybody knew it was the last game for district and [wanted] to finish it on a good note,” Bos said.
In the first half, Moncrief lined up to take a free kick from the edge of the box and then struck the ball into the right corner of the goal and just outside of the goalkeeper’s reach, giving the Wolverines the first goal of the game. However, The Colony then responded with a goal, as the Wolverines left an attacker open in the middle of the box. Looking to regain the lead, Mayer found herself open inside of the box later in the first half. She then took a quick first touch after receiving the ball and put the ball into the left corner of the goal. Before the end of the first half, Altieri found the back of the net off of a corner to extend the lead.
After being up at halftime, Bos had a breakaway, causing The Colony’s goalkeeper to come out before Bos shot it into the middle of the goal. Into the closing minutes of the game, the Wolverines gave up a goal because of a miscommunication on defense.
Despite giving up a couple goals, the Wolverines’ hardwork in practice paid off in the win.
“We did really well working as a team to create more scoring opportunities,” sophomore midfielder Finley McKnight said. “We work really hard on and off the field, and a lot of team bonding [helps us be more connected].”
With the team not losing a game all season, it is the first time that they have been unbeaten through district play since the 2018 season.
“I don’t think we have ever been undefeated in the past four years. We have always had chances, and then we never get it,” Bos said. “It’s a big step for us that [helps] the mindset going into the playoffs.”
Since Bos is now a senior on the team, it is even more important for her that they are successful in the playoffs.
“I don’t think it has really hit me yet that it’s my last year, and it will be over soon. But now it’s the idea that every game is your last game,” Bos said.
Looking to continue the dominant season, the Wolverines will play Lebanon Trail High School tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Kuykendall Stadium, and tickets will be available for purchase at tickets.friscoisd.org.
“[We need to] go 100% the entire time. Even if we’re up, we need to not step back,” Bos said.
