“Safely delivered!” claims your Amazon app.
Finally! You’ve been waiting for your new pair of shoes for so long.
Yet, when you finally open your long awaited package, the box is busted open and completely empty. What in the world could have happened?
“It is quite common for people to seize the opportunity when they notice a package left on a doorstep or a porch. These people are often referred to as porch pirates,” says ADT, a home security provider.
Porch pirates can be anyone, whether they are intentionally looking to take valuable packages or simply seize the opportunity to steal when they see an unattended box.
In Texas, porch piracy (the stealing of packages or items in packages from delivery locations like doorsteps) runs rampant. Security.org writers report that in the last year alone, “Porch pirates stole $12 billion in packages and as many as 58 million Americans have become victims.”
That’s a high price to pay for something that could have been prevented.
