On Wednesday, Sept. 25, a fire broke out at Texas Pool Supply at 10550 John W. Elliott Dr, about a seven minute drive from Wakeland High School. The fire, likely caused by a chemical reaction outside the building, sent fumes drifting over Wakeland High School in the morning and forced a Hazmat Shelter-in-Place during first period.
Potentially hazardous fumes from the chemical fire caused the students and teachers at Wakeland to stay inside. These fumes were believed to be hazardous because they came from a large fire over at the Texas Pool Supply building, caused by a chemical reaction.
First responders determined the fumes were not hazardous by 9:28 a.m. Three firefighters and seven police officers were hospitalized, but were released the next day.
At first, many students were confused as to why there was a Hazmat Shelter-in-place, because the news of the fumes and the fire was not shared with most students. “I was so confused,” Mallory Warner said. “I had no idea what was going on.”
However, people near the fire took photos, which spread fast. “My friend saw the fire and sent me a picture,” said Adelyne Miller. “It looked so scary.”
The news did not only spread to students, but their parents too, causing worry and concerns for student safety. “When I heard about it I was frightened,” said Keri Joeckel. “I was worried that my daughter would be harmed.”
Texas Pool Supply is temporarily closed, according to their Google Places listing.
