A new change is coming to the 2026-2027 school year. As of December 16th, Wakeland High School will be in the 6A classification next year, as announced by The University Interscholastic League.
Every year, The University Interscholastic League or UIL realigns school classifications for the upcoming 2 years. In every year past, Wakeland has stayed underneath the requirements to become a 6A school. This year however, The UIL decided that the enrollment numbers projected for Wakeland in the upcoming 2 years was enough to classify us as a 6A. At this time Wakeland is the only school in Frisco ISD to move up to this level.
We are a destination school, meaning that people come from all over to attend, some people even go as far as moving homes to make sure they are zoned for Wakeland. Wakeland upholds a reputation of excellence in academics, fine arts, sports, teachers and extracurricular groups. Because of this, every year there is a population increase that has caused us to join the ranks of 6A.
If you are upset or worried about this, don’t be. In previous years schools aligned to be 6A have been able to drop back down to 5A. Schools like these include Highland Park, and Little Elm. It is also important to know that there is projected to be a population drop in Frisco leading to Wakeland being able to drop back down to 5A. The UIL committee meets every year to align schools’ classifications so there is a fair chance Wakeland could drop down.
