Maddie Powell, Wakeland High School’s librarian, has been named the 2025 Teacher of the Year for her dedication to giving students the best possible experience each time they visit the library.
For the past 13 years, Powell has created a welcoming and engaging library environment that encourages students to explore, learn, and connect. When I asked what the award means to her, she said, “I am so honored! It is validation that I am helping teachers and students and making a difference.”
She’s known for going above and beyond to help students, whether they’re searching for their next favorite book or working on projects for any class. Powell said she tries to keep the library fun and fresh, “I try to make the library a fun and welcoming place… always changing things up!”
Her favorite part of the job is getting to work with students every day. She loves helping them find what they need and making the library a place where they feel comfortable. In her own words, “I love seeing them take accountability for their learning and speaking up for what they need and like in school.”
Her enthusiasm and commitment to student success and the Wakeland library has made the library a favorite spot on campus for many students and earned her recognition as Wakeland’s most inspiring educator of the year.
