The Wakeland football team has an overall record of 7-2 and finished third in district through the regular season.  Wakeland football had a successful season despite some setbacks against Lone Star and Denton Ryan.

“Well, I think it’s like anything when you have a setback, whether it’s in football or life. You have to get up off the mat and fight…as far as I’m concerned the effect [the loss against Lone Star] has had on me is just to work harder and work smarter,” Head Coach Secord said.

Wakeland football certainly got off the mat and fought, with a 35-21 win against Reedy and a 56-0 win against Denton since the loss against Lone Star.  Before the game against Reedy, Coach Secord talked about what the team needed to work on in practice on offense.

“We’ve got the passes we’re going to throw against Reedy and the runs we’re going to make against Reedy, and we’ve been working really hard to execute those, so that’s the biggest thing: execution,” he said.

The team executed the plays well, contributing to their wins.

“We’ve tried to just make our adjustments that we’re going to make on defense our fronts, our stunts, and our coverages,” Coach Secord said.

The hard work on the defensive end clearly paid off, shutting out Denton in their final regular season game.

With the playoffs in sight, Sophomore Christian Speer, who is in his first year on varsity, is excited for the playoffs.

“The opportunity to go further in the season and to play against people who are really far away.  [It will be exciting to] see what that experience is like,” Speer said.

Wakeland football is going to need help from newcomers like Christian and the leadership of returning players to ensure a win against first round opponent, Woodrow Wilson, who finished the season with an overall record of 8-2, according to MaxPreps.com.  The team is going to need to continue to execute on both ends to keep the momentum going in the playoffs.  The first playoff game is tonight at 7:00 at Forester Field in Dallas.
