Round One Knockout

The Wakeland varsity football team has come together to fight through playoffs surpassing their first opponent, the Birdville Hawks, and advanced to the second round.

“We have a motto that we came up with together as a team. It’s S.E.L.L., which is an acronym,” sophomore Garrett Sexton said.

S.E.L.L. stands for sacrifice, effort, loyalty, and love.

“It represents our core values. The entire football team came up with them together to show what we do and what the team is all about,” junior Andrew Kirkland said.

With a regular season record of 6-4, and a district record of 5-3, Wakeland was third in the district going into playoffs.

The Birdville Hawks were the first round opponent in the playoffs and the Wolverines secured that victory on November 11, 2022. The game remained close in the first half, but Wakeland took off in the second half. They dominated the game, winning 42 to 28.

They will play Port Arthur Memorial in the second round of playoffs on November 18, 2022, at 7 p.m. at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin, Texas. The winner of this match will move on to face the winner of the Longview vs. Lone Star game.

Wakeland is currently Bi-District champions. If they beat Port Arthur Memorial they will be area champions.

“Last year, [playoffs were] fun,” Kirkland said. “We made it really far and we’re trying to repeat what we did.”
