Wakeland is known for having highly competitive sports and academic teams. A year-round sport that many think is just the spring is golf – and the teams have been successful year after year. The girls’ golf team continues its legacy this year at districts. The girls’ team walked away with the number one spot in the district during the tournament at the Tribute Golf Club in The Colony on March 27-28, 2023.

One golfer in particular, sophomore Grace Kalina, won the title of district champion for the second year in a row, helping to bring home the trophy. Kalina claimed that she struggled a bit with her mental game while competing in districts, causing her to add a few more strokes than she would’ve liked.

“I definitely didn’t play my best, and I left a lot of strokes out on the course, but it was a great learning experience,” Kalina said.
Other Wakeland girls golfers also placed highly, with sophomore Adelina Toba ranking third overall.

“I’m happy with how I played in districts, but I also know I could have played better, [which] only gives me more motivation in my practice and for the future,” Toba said.

Sophomore Ava Weichbrodt finished earlier on the second day of the tournament, and she nervously awaited for her teammates and competitors to finish and for the scores to be finalized.

“I felt anxious because I didn’t know how everyone was playing. After we finish our round, we can’t go back on the course because we would get disqualified,” Weichbrodt said.

After winning the district championship, the girls’ team advances to compete in the regional tournament on April 17-20, 2023, in Rockwall. In the meantime, the girls are keeping up their energy, confidence, and skills to prepare for regionals.

“Last year I was able to place in the top 10, even after a rough first round, so I know this year I have a great chance of making it to state,” Kalina said.

Wakeland golf also competed for individual places, with four girls placing on the all-district team. The boys had seven competitors make it on the all-district team, including the top three competitors at the tournament. Wakeland’s boys’ golf team had an overall outstanding performance, taking first and second place at districts, making Wakeland the only school to advance from our district.
