Last week on January 29th, Wakeland Wrestling made history by winning districts and having ten athletes placed. This is a huge accomplishment for Wakeland and highlights the team’s hard work and dedication.
Due to the winter storm last week wrestlers faced complications with practicing and preparing for districts. Regardless, on Thursday they showed up to the meet with confidence disregarding their drawbacks.
“Although we didn’t get much prep, I trusted the team,” Junior Bennett Henderson said. “ And we delivered despite the circumstances”.
This marks the first time Wakeland Wrestling has won a district title, while also sending ten athletes to regionals and advancing the entire girls wrestling team. The historic victory represents a milestone moment for Wakeland athletics and the wrestling program as a whole.
“Winning the District Championship means more about the past than the future. It shows our guys that all the hard work they put in was worth it!,” Coach Reyes said. “Hard work pays off, you just have to stay focused on your goals, even when it gets tough.”
After strong growth over the past two years, the wrestling program looks ahead with confidence. Let’s wish the team the best of luck at regionals!
