Over the past weekend, Wakeland swim and dive competed and conquered at the 5A Region 3 Championships. This win led many students to advance to the UIL State meet, which will take place from Friday, February 20th, to Saturday, February 21st.
Wakeland boys scored an excellent 455 points at the Regional competition, leading by over 100 points. Their hard work and training throughout the season helped them achieve this impressive feat, and their continued endurance will help them succeed in future competitions.
The girls’ team also had an outstanding performance, finishing second with 282.5 points. Overall, the competition went fantastically, with 19 students advancing to the state competition to represent Wakeland. “It was great to see our hard work pay off,” junior Julia Udrys said. “I’m excited to show my efforts at State.”
Wakeland had many individual region champions as well. Elisabeth Lange led the girls’ 200 free, and Katelyn McCarry won the girls’ 100 fly. Katelyn also set the Wakeland school record for 100 fly with a time of 55.76, as well as the 200 IM, with a time of 2:05.85. For boys, Danny Garcia-Villar won the boys’ 100 back, while Charlie Wang led the podium in both boys’ 200 IM and 100 breast.
Additionally, the Wakeland team won the boys’ 200 medley relay (Danny Garcia-Villar, Charlie Wang, Elijah Tong, Jorge Stewart-D’avila) and the boys’ 400 freestyle relay (Aleksander Futrell, Jorge Stewart-D’avila, Daniel Kim, Danny Garcia-Villar).
Our Wolverines represented Wakeland amazingly well with these impressive accomplishments. Let’s wish them luck for the State competition later this month!
