Last Friday, both the Wakeland boys and girls soccer teams competed in the playoff semifinals, fighting for a chance to represent the Wolverines in the state finals.
On April 3, the Wakeland boys defeated El Paso Burges in Midland through teamwork and determination. After controlling most of the game, the teams ended regulation tied 1-1 with a goal from Waleed Hadj-Hamou. Wakeland then pulled through in penalty kicks, earning a 4-2 victory.
The boys will compete at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown against Comal Pieper in the Class 5A Division II state title game. They are seeking their sixth state championship, which would tie the record for the most boys UIL soccer titles in state history.
The Wakeland girls also played hard in their semifinal matchup Friday against Grapevine at the Ford Center at The Star. They controlled possession for much of the game, but Grapevine scored early and held on for a 1-0 win to advance to the finals.
Students traveling to Georgetown to attend the boys soccer game will receive an excused absence for the day. Come out and support your Wolverines!
